Is It Better To Build Muscle To Lose Fat Instead Of Doing More Cardio?

Many experts, guru's and personal trainers will argue this point to the death, but is it really true. Is it better to build muscle to lose fat instead of doing more cardio?

There is not a definite answer and let me tell you right off the bat, that you are going to have to test what works best for your body and situation.

You might not have the time to do cardio at 40min a session, 2 times a day. But you probably have the time to lift weights hard for 1hr a day.

Plus genetics will also have a big role in what is most effective in terms of fat loss, as well. Many fitness models don't do cardio, while some live and die by it 2 and sometimes 3 times per day.

So lets look at the facts so you can decide what is the best route for you to take.

First, muscle is the number one factor in how high of a metabolic rate you will have. The more muscle you have the more calories you will burn for days and weeks on end just to maintain that muscle.

This can add up to thousands of calories per day, if you have enough muscle built on your frame

On the other hand, normal steady state cardio does not do that. Cardio done in the so-called "fat burning" zone will only burn calories during the time you are doing it.

Roughly, 30 min of traditional cardio, will burn around 300 calories. Not bad and certainly better than nothing.

Knowing that we have to decide which model provides you with the most benefit. If you are short on time you can stick to lifting heavy weights 4 times a week and long term get major fat loss benefits.

If on the other hand, you enjoy being on the elliptical or treadmill for 40min you can do that too. But you will have to sacrifice more time.

My thoughts are that you would pick to build muscle to lose fat instead of doing more cardio.

All in all in, it's really a matter of personal preference, testing to see what works for you and fitting it into your own lifestyle everyday.
