Varicose and Spider Veins and How to Treat It

Information you Must Know About Spider and Varicose Veins

Everyone has veins that run all over your body providing blood that is low in oxygen to the heart and lungs to be replenished. This is the normal circulatory actions that happen at every second of the day. When the blood doesn't flow properly through the body, these veins can become enlarged with pools of blood. This visible enlargement of the veins, called varicose veins, can be associated with tired, heavy, or aching limbs. Varicose veins tend to be most common in the legs and thighs. Much like varicose veins, spider veins can show up on the surface of the skin as well. Although varicose veins look like thicker bulging veins, spider veins look thinner in small clusters or even a web-like maze. Spider veins can appear all over the body, but they are most common in the thighs, ankles, and feet.

Treatments for varicose and spider veins can differ depending on the doctor that you are working with. Treatment is not necessary simply because it is usually just a cosmetic problem for most people. Only when the cases become severe involving open ulcers is treatment required. There are quite a few different types of treatments that can be used.

  • Sclerotherapy-This is a non-surgical method where a medicine is injected using small needles into the vein site. This medicine will help to cause the varicose or spider veins disappear. Most people require two or more treatments and are required to wear a compression stocking after the treatments for a short period.
  • Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELVT) - This treatment uses laser energy to shrink the veins and close the damaged veins, forcing the blood to flow through the working veins. This treatment also minimizes the visible look of all of the veins making it harder to notice any difference on your legs. It is a minimally invasive process that takes only about 45 minutes.
  • Laser and Pulsed Light- These treatments are an alternative to sclerotherapy. The basic idea is that a light beam is pulsed onto the spider veins to help to close them off and cause them to break up. Multiple treatments are usually required for the average person.

These are just a few of the many treatments available for varicose and spider veins. There are other alternatives if these don't seem like one that you might consider.
