Understanding Your Skin And What It Will Do For You
The Skin Is Composed Of Many Layers That "Shed" Constantly:
As new skin tissue grows from within, the outer layers (or "scarf" skin) constantly shed like bark from a tree. Thus, discolored and worn tissue is discarded, and young fresh skin replaces it.
The Skin's Texture Varies:
It is tough in spots, as on the heels of our feet, so that we can walk on them without injury. In other areas, it is tender and delicate, as on the fingertips, so that our sense of touch will be accurate.
The Skin Often Warns Us Of Danger:
It is able to sense heat or cold before we contact it. So sensitive is the skin, that it even replaces the eyes of a blind person who reads books through the sense of touch in their fingertips. Many people can sense the presence of other people in a room through the delicate nerves in the skin.
The Skin Has The Ability To Become Thicker OR Thinner:
Depending on how we treat the skin, it can become thicker or thinner in a matter of days. When we work with our hands excessively, as in rowing a boat, within a short period of time the skin on our palms will become thick and calloused. When we stop that activity and properly care for our hands, the skin resumes its thin and delicate feel. Herein lies an essential beauty lesson, which will be applied often as we study the skin and its care. We can help our skin BEAUTIFY ITSELF, if we observe nature's laws of cause and effect, and work with these laws.
Another Task For The Skin Is The Elimination Of Waste Matter From The Body:
The millions of tiny glands or pores in the skin, discharge many kinds of impurities from the body. In fact, the pores must discharge almost as much waste matter from the body every day as do the kidneys. Especially important to this function is the area under the arms, where pores are very large and secretions flow freely, in the form of perspiration. However, when an anti-perspirant is used to close these pores, nature seeks other outlets. Waste is rerouted to other pores, including those on the face, some times leading to complaints of "oily skin," which is really an oily condition that can be corrected.
The Skin Is A Kind Of Natural Thermostat:
The skin helps to control body temperature. When temperature in the environment drops, the pores close tightly to conserve body heat. As the temperature rises, the pores open and secrete moisture to the skin's surface. This moisture evaporates and creates "cold," which brings body temperature back to normal. When the body is covered with clothing, the largest area of exposed skin is the face and the process of evaporation and temperature control is concentrated in this area, thereby keeping the facial glands more active, and secreting liquids to be evaporated.
Some people interpret this natural temperature control process as oily skin at one time and dry skin at another. Actually, it is just nature assisting our bodies to adjust to variations in temperature. If we wore less clothing, the pores of the facial skin would not have to make such adjustments. This is more evident of course in the Summer time or locations which have warmer climates.
These Are A Few Of Your Skin's Many Natural Responsibilities:
By understanding these responsibilities, we can understand why many so-called "skin problems" are in fact, the skin fulfilling its natural tasks. This marvelous organ responds quickly to kindness and care. Remember, when you do not abuse your toes, you do not have corns; when you care for your complexion, it will do everything naturally possible to be soft, clear and youthful in appearance. To this end, correct beauty care is essential.
